Alexander Insurance Agency, Inc. is in the process of developing a safety and loss control manual for the towing industry. As part of this process, we have interviewed loss control people in and outside the towing industry. Since it will be some time before the manual is finished, from time to time, I thought I'd share with you some things we have learned.
The topic here is clothing and grooming, a rather unusual topic for a safety manual you might say. Actually, some of the following items are already part of our underwriting process or will be required. By requiring these to be followed by your drivers, you will enable Alexander Insurance Agency, Inc. to get you the best pricing for your insurance.
Uniforms: The use of clean company uniforms should be required of all drivers.
Shoes: Because of the very nature of your work, you should make approved hard toed safety shoes a requirement.
Vests: Reflective safety vest should be required for use on every recovery.
Gloves: Heavy-duty work gloves should be used.
Hair: Long hair (suggested no longer than collar length) should not be allowed. This is to prevent it being caught in pulleys or cables.
Facial Hair: Beards or mustaches that extend past the lips should not be allowed. Because of the threat of exposure to hazardous materials is ever present in you work, a tight seal on a breathing mask could be life saving should such an exposure occur.
While safety concerns are the main reason for the above requirements, well-groomed employees will give your company a professional look to both your customers and the public.
When one an Alexander Insurance Agency, Inc. safety inspector visits your company, we will be checking to see that the above requirements are being followed.
